Abstract:
The process of salt accumulation due to water uptake by the roots of soybean plants is numerically solved using an implicit finite difference method to calculate soil water movement, and the method of characteristics to accurately compute salt transport. The concept of the root contact model formulated by Herkelrath et al. (1977) is applied to the mathematical description of root water uptake in the presence of salinity. The computed water and salt profiles agree well with measured data. The transpiration rate under saline water conditions is lower than that under freshwater conditions. -from Authors
