Abstract:
During the last 20 years lychee and longan have been successfully propagated in the Vocani Center by rooting leafy cuttings under mist. The average success rate was 60 to 90%; the rate was influenced mainly by the cultivar and the quality of propagating material. Green woody cuttings, 25-30 cm long and 5-8 mm wide at the base, with healthy mature leaves, were used. The base of the cutting was dipped in talc powder containing synthetic auxin, KIBA, and then inserted in a small bottomless container (0.75 L). The rooting media contained slow release fertilizer. The cuttings were kept under mist and the temperature of the media was kept at about 28°C. After two to three months roots could be observed at the bottom of the containers. Cuttings with roots were transferred for hardening to plastic tunnels. After three to four weeks a good root system developed and the plants were transplanted into 8 L containers. Four to five months later the plants were ready for planting in the field. Thousands of lychee and longan plants were produced by this method. In general, these plants were uniform and had an erect appearance, in contrast with the variable and spreading air-layered plants. © ISHS.
