The variety of flow visualisation techniques used to research double-diffusive convection is reviewed. It is concluded that the variety of techniques is related to the variety of phenomena existing in double-diffusive convection, and hopefully that an appropriate method for any phenomenon is covered. The optical methods of shadowgraph, Schlieren, interferometry and polarigraph; tracers; thymol blue (pH variations) and particle techniques may all be suitable. Photographs showing results of flow visualisation studies from a variety of techniques illustrate the review. (P.J.B.)
