Abstract:
A new phenomenon of proliferation and branching of cotton has spread through most of the cotton growing areas in Israel in the past few years. Aphids, green leafhoppers and mites were ruled out as possible causal agents of branching. Leaf damage and bud destruction, similar to those observed in the field, were obtained by prolonged feeding of a laboratory-bred population of Thrips tabaci Lindeman on cotton seedlings. The feeding thrips were kept in a growth chamber at the temperatures and light conditions which prevail in April. The damage caused by T. tabaci in Israel is very similar to that described for several species of thrips, including T. tabaci, in other countries. Yield of fiber and seed was significantly reduced in plants when branching occurred early (up to the beginning of June) but not late in the growing season. © 1986, Springer Science + Business Media B.V..
