A machine development project was initiated to provide a performance evaluation of commercial forage harvester operations on pineapple under typical Hawaiian conditions and to obtain information on service maintenance, adjustments, operator procedures, and recommended design modifications. Work during the first phase of the project centered on making design changes on the standard row-crop header to permit its use for pineapple plant chopping at an acceptable level of harvest capacity. Based on these improvements, design recommendations can now be presented to the manufacturer or equipment purchaser for more effective machine function. Field tests of the redesigned unit have demonstrated that the header row provides free flow of plant material to the chopping mechanism, permitting continuous and more efficient field harvest operations. Modifications allow the header to cut lower to the ground and generally eliminate plugging on extra large pineapple stumps.
