Abstract:
Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) multiplication in Samsun and Samsun NN mesophyll protoplasts gradually decreased to 33% and 50%, respectively, by local lesion assays and to 12% and 17% by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), when the mannitol concentration in the protoplast incubation medium was increased from 0.74 M to 1.07 M. These results suggest that the suppression of virus content observed in inoculated leaves under plasmolyzing conditions, are due in part to a suppression of the virus-replicative capacity of the cell and not only to disruption of the plasmodesmatal connections between cells. © 1982.
