Field experiments and computer simulation experiments were used in a complementary fashion to provide the basis for integrating host resistance and fungicides to manage potato early blight and potato late blight. Field experiments provided the raw data for construction of computer simulators and were used to test the predictions of computer simulators. The simulators have been used to evaluate a large number of management strategies under a diversity of conditions, so that the "optimal" strategy can be identified. Important and/or unexpected conclusions from the simulation analyses were tested in field experiments. This combined approach has enabled the construction of a strategy which considers early blight and late blight simultaneously. A computer-based decision support system is being developed to aid the implementation of the integrated strategy. The eventual form of the decision support system should enable growers to readily complement host resistance by adjustment of fungicide application. © 1990 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
