Polysaccharides which lowered blood glucose concentration in vivo, were examined for their effects on glucose uptake and glucose oxidation by inverted intestinal fragments of rats. The examined polysaccharides exhibited dose‐dependent stimulations of glucose oxidation (CO2 release) between 75 and 300 μg/ml incubation mixture. The effects increased to maximal values, as compared to the control at external glucose concentrations of 0.06‐0.25 mM (depending on the glycan), after which inhibitory trends were observed. No effect on the rate of glucose uptake could be observed. Copyright © 1989 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
