Abstract:
A group of twelve Holstein cows were subjected to four stimulation routines: premilking manual stimulation, no stimulation, stimulation by application of positive pressure during the rest phase and stimulation by the application of a higher pulsation rate. Premilking manual stimulation was found to have an advantage over other treatments in shortening machine milking time and enhancing butterfat yield. Peak and average rates of milk flow were also increased as a result of premilking manual stimulation. Serum oxytocin concentrations associated with premilking manual stimulation were compared with concentrations obtained with no manual stimulation. Refs.
