Results are presented of early screening at the seed and seedling stages of provenances of Aleppo pine from Israel. The following characters were investigated: seed germination at various levels of moisture stress; catalase activity of seeds; phototropism of seedlings; respiration rate of seedlings; and growth rate of seedlings. Integration of data obtained in earlier studies was done for a better evaluation of the results gained. Of the provenances tested, the Umm Safa and Isfiya provenances from the Judean Mountains and Mt. Carmel, respectively, are outstanding in high percent seed germination under moisture stress, low response to lateral illumination, and high growth rate of seedlings. © 1989.
