Abstract:
The Mediterranean fruit fly (MFF) is a major pest of fruit crops in the Near East and worldwide. The current MFF weekly monitoring methodology results in a sub-optimal spraying frequency. This paper describes the first step in the development of an automatic trap for sequential MFF monitoring. Examination of trap performance in commercial orchards shows that these traps have acceptable sensitivity in comparison to regular traps and they accurately count the trapped flies (93-100%). In general there is very low over-counting but they still suffer from false counting mainly because of entries of ants and rain drops. This kind of trap can be used to continuously monitor the in-field variability of MFF infestation and improve its control.
