The analyses of virgin female sex pheromone gland extracts by gas chromatography (GC), GC-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) and GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) followed by field-trapping experiments, have identified (E)-9-tetradecenyl acetate (E9-14:Ac) as the primary sex pheromone component of the spruce budmoth, Zeiraphera canadensis. Dosages of 1.0-100.0 {right triangle above left triangle}g of E9-14:Ac impregnated in rubber septa provide effective trap baits. © 1989 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
