Abstract:
The response of irrigated oil-olive orchards, planted in high pH soils, to springtime application of iron chelate (Sequestrene-G100) was studied. Annual rates of 0 (control), 25, 50 and 100 g Sequestrene per tree were applied. Experiments were conducted over two successive years in one commercial orchard (cultivar 'Barnea') and over three successive years in another orchard (cultivar 'Souri'). Sequestrene application resulted in higher SPAD values, indicating higher chlorophyll content in the treated trees. A general trend of higher iron concentration in diagnostic leaves was observed with increased levels of Sequestrene application. The improvement in iron concentration and SPAD values did not result in a significant increase in fruit or oil production.
