Climate, particularly temperature, strongly affected the development of water stress in seedlings of Pirns taeda L., Pinus radiata D. Don and Pirns brutia Ten. For given soil water potentials, plant water potentials were more negative under warm than under cool climates. Under stress, needle water potentials of P. brutia were much lower than the two other species in all climatic conditions. This may be related to the slow top growth of P. brutia under field conditions with a long dry season. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
