Carnation meristems cultured in vitro grow into shoots of three types: normal, translucent and succulent. The apical meristem of succulent shoots was of the mantle-core type and it lacked pro-vascular tissue. The leaf had large vacuolated mesophyll cells, fewer stomata (often plugged), and no plate meristem. A higher agar concentration in the medium increased the percentage of normal shoots developing. This supports other indications that the water potential of the medium affects morphogenesis. © 1983 Annals of Botany Company.
