Abstract:
Soil water management plays a major role in management of compaction. Drainage and/or irrigation can aid in maintaining the soil water matrix potential in the desirable range. Matching machine operations to soil conditions for prevention or alleviation of compaction is a major management tool. Ground contact pressure can be manipulated by number, kind, size and inflation pressures of tires. Speed of machine operation, number of passes and soil water content are important in operation of machines. Agronomic practices for prevention or alleviation of compaction include crop rotations which require a minimum of traffic, crops that produce organic materials for maintenance of soil organic matter, crops with penetrating and fibrous root systems, liming, and animal grazing management.
