Abstract:
When young bean plants are mechanically perturbed for up to 10 days, they accumulate large amounts of an auxin-like substance and increased amounts of ABA. Exogenous ethylene, applied in the form of ethephon, produces the same result. Physiologically moderately high amounts of exogenously applied IAA or lower amounts of ABA cause the same sort of retardation of elongation that is caused by either mechanical perturbation or exogenous ethephon. Either mechanical perturbation or applied ethephon significantly retards the polar basipetal transport of 14C-IAA It is proposed that mechanical perturbation of bean internodes induces ethylene evolution which, in turn, induces the accumulation of high levels of IAA and the production of ABA, both of which contribute to the retardation of elongation of the internodes. © 1982 The Japanese Society of Plant Physiologists.
