International Water and Irrigation
A numerical study was conducted to investigate the relative quantity and quality of the irrigation water on water uptake, active root volume and solute leaching. It also tested the hypothesis that the reduced active root zone associated with salt accumulation reduced water uptake by plant roots and assessed the impact of quantity and quality substitutions according to the FAO recommendations on salinity control in terms of agricultural and environmental aspects. A series of simulations of water flow and solute transport from multiple trickle lines under cropped conditions were modeled by flow and transport models to determine these objectives. The investigations revealed significant differences between the combinations of quantity and quality of water and solutes depending on whether the soil was clay or sandy. The results of this study improved the understanding of water uptake dynamics under conditions of saline irrigation water and surface drip irrigation and its consequences on salinity control.
