Introduction of new species and provenances of coniferous and broadleaved trees for afforestation in Israel was conducted on 23 sites in the Mediterranean region, some of them in semi-arid areas. A total of 135 species and provenances were planted. The list of successful species for arid sites is supplemented by data from a previous survey, which summarized the trials on some 30 experimental plots in the northern and western Negev, with its arid and semi-arid climate. The most successful species on the semi-arid and arid sites on loess, regosols, serozems and lithosols were of the genera Eucalyptus, Acacia, and several species of Prosopis, Casuarina and Allocasuarina. The majority of species for afforestation in the Mediterranean mountain area of the northern and central parts of Israel on terra rosa and rendzina soils, were of the genera Pinus and Cupressus.
