Abstract:
When heat-killed Pseudomonas syringae cells were injected into the intracellular spaces of Nicotiana tabacum var. Samsun NN leaves 0-7 days before inoculation with tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), the number of TMV lesions produced was decreased to 3-12% of the number in water-injected control leaves. When heat-killed bacteria were injected 5-72 hours after inoculation with TMV, lesion number was decreased by 86-0% and area per lesion by 95-33%. Cell-free supernatant fluid obtained by centrifuging bacterial preparations did not decrease lesion number, but preparations of disrupted bacteria did. TMV was not inactivated in vitro by bacterial preparations, and the effect of the preparations in vivo was greatly decreased by actinomycin D, a result suggesting that the synthesis of tobacco-leaf RNA is involved. © 1964.
