Abstract:
1. 1. Glucose kinetics and respiratory metabolism were studied simultaneously in hypothermic, normothermic and hyperthermic fasted chickens (Galus domesticus) in vivo. Glucose turnover, recycling and oxidation rates as glucose contribution to the total energy expenditure were obtained from the specific activity of plasma (U-14C, 6-3H) glucose, expired 14CO2 and direct measurements of gas exchange. 2. 2. Hypothermy induced shivering and an increase in the metabolic rate while hyperthermy induced panting with no change in O2 consumption and CO2 production. The relative contribution of glucose to heat production did not differ between the thermal conditions. 3. 3. Glucose turnover and oxidation rates increased in the hypothermic chicks, while hyperthermy increased the rates of glucose turnover and recycling. 4. 4. The hierarchy of the mechanisms that are involved in the maintenance of glucose homeostasis and its interaction with heat production was discussed. © 1980.
