Abstract:
1. 1. The effects of 3β-hydroxy-Δ5-norcholenic acids on sterol metabolism were examined in the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta (Johannson) and the rat. 2. 2. This steroidal acid inhibited the Δ24-sterol reductase enzyme systems(s), that converts desmosterol to cholesterol, in the two species both in vivo and in vitro. 3. 3. Although the compound, when administered orally, brought about an accumulation of desmosterol in both species, no adverse effect was noted in either the insect or rat. 4. 4. When the inhibitor was injected intraperitoneally in oil, into the rat, it caused an initial weight loss and formation of "plaques" on the surface of the liver. © 1969.
