Abstract:
Spiegel-Roy P., teich A.H. and Kochba J. Gamma irradiation and pollen cultivar influence on polyembryony of "Satsuma" (Citrus unshiu marc.). Radiation Botany 12, 365-367, 1972.-Seed of the mandarin orange cv. "Satsuma", obtained by controlled pollination with two other cultivars, was irradiated from a 60Co gamma-ray source. Pollen cultivar influenced germination rate and percentage and frequency of polyembryonic seed. Irradiation with 4 kR and larger doses delayed germination and reduced the number of germinated polyembryonic seed. Exposures low enough not to reduce germination per cent, nevertheless delayed germination. With increasing radiation exposure, the first seeds to suffer were those with the most embryos. Germination rate of seed with one or two embryos was stimulated with radiation levels up to 4 kR. Monoembryonic seed tolerated higher radiation exposures than polyembryonic seed, both in germination rate and per cent. No serious damage to monoembryonic seed was observed with as much as 10 kR, and with one pollen, cultivar (clementine) doses up to 10 kR slightly increased germination percentage. © 1972 Pergamon Press Ltd.
