Abstract:
α-Amanitin was injected into ligated Calliphora larvae and its effect on the synthesis of various classes of RNA was determined by gel electrophorsis. The synthesis of heterodisperse RNA was largely inhibited, but the synthesis of a small portion of this RNA was insensitive to the drug. The synthesis of ribosomal RNA was completely depressed. This inhibition of rRNA seemed to begin later and recovery of synthesis started earlier than that of heterodisperse RNA. The synthesis of transfer RNA was practically unaffected. The differential effect of α-amanitin on the various classes of RNA is interpreted to indicate that in insects, as in other eukaryotes, several distinct RNA polymerases exist. © 1972.
