Abstract:
The effect of the synthetic cytokinin benzyladenine (BA) on fruit size of 'Spadona' and 'Coscia' pear was examined in Israel during three consecutive years (1999-2001). BA applied at 100 mg l-1, 2 weeks after full bloom, when the fruitlet diameter was 10 mm, caused appreciable increase in fruit size of both varieties. However, each variety showed a different response to BA. In Spadona, the increase in fruit size was accompanied by slight thinning, while in Coscia there was a heavy thinning effect. Although the increase in fruit size can be attributed to some thinning effect, the main effect was possibly via direct stimulation of fruit cell division. BA increased fruit size with no influence on fruit shape and seed number, and it did not reduce the return yield in the following year. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
