A polydisperse phytotoxic glycopeptide was produced by cultures of Phoma tracheiphila and a compound similar to it was isolated from lemon seedlings infected by this pathogen. The glycopeptides from both sources induced typical disease symptoms, had similar molecular weights, as judged by their elution volumes from a Sepharose 6B column, and were related antigenically. The peptide and the sugar portions of the glycopeptide from both sources were nearly identical. The two glycopeptides contained similar amounts of many common amino acids and sugars, such as mannose, galactose and glucose. The toxins differed slightly in their electrophoretic mobility on acrylamide gels. The glycopeptide was present in infected plants in quantities which would account for symptom production and thus the toxin may play a r6le in the disease process. The trivial name "malseccin" is proposed for the toxin. © 1979.
