Synthetic diets were prepared for the green peach aphid Myzus persicae differing in the sucrose-amino acid ratio. The post-natal effect of these diets on wing determination was evaluated. When the sucrose-amino acid ratio deviated from the median ratio of 10% sucrose to 2·4% amino acids, more alatae were produced. Omission of any one of the following vitamins: ascorbic acid, biotin, choline chloride, folic acid, nicotinic acid, pyridoxine, riboflavine, or thiamine had no significant effect on wing formation. On the other hand, lack of iron or zinc in diets increased the percentage of alates formed, whereas larvae deprived of phosphate developed mainly to apterae. When copper, manganese, or magnesium were omitted no effect on wing formation was found. Attention is drawn to the apparently similar effect on wing determination of imbalanced synthetic diets and waning host plants. © 1971.
