Abstract:
A greenhouse study was initiated to test whether plant yield and phosphorus uptake are governed by localized phosphate concentrations or by an average value of the phosphate present in the total volume of the container. The experimental design gave three fertilizer concentrations per unit fertilized soil, when disregarding concentrations; five levels of phosphate were applied to the whole pot. For all forms of phosphates used the results showed a clear dependence of yield and percentage P in dry matter on the total supply of phosphates in the root zone and not on local concentrations obtained when assembling the fertilizer in a relatively narrow zone of the container.
