Abstract:
The superoxide radical anion, O2 -, readily reacts with electron acceptors, such as quinones, nitro-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons, etc., to yield the corresponding radical anions. With electron donors, such as amines, the superoxide anion reacts as an oxidant to give nitric oxides. No experimental support could be provided to the suggested use of superoxide ion as a source of singlet molecular oxygen, O2(1Σg +).
