The effect of pruned versus unpruned trap-logs of Cupressus sempervirens L. on infestation and gallery construction of the bark beetles Phloeosinus armatus Reiter and P. aubei Perris (=bicolor Brulle) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) was compared. Gallery density, total gallery length and cumulative density of penetration holes of both species, and the average gallery length of P. armatus, were significantly higher in the unpruned logs. Pruning adversely affected brood development of P. armatus. The data suggest that unpruned trap-logs should be used to control both Phloeosinus spp. Differences in effectiveness between the two types of logs are assumed to be related to the slow rate of water loss from the pruned logs. © 1983 Springer Science + Business Media B.V.
