Abstract:
An aqueous neem seed kernel extract was sprayed at different concentrations on sweet corn seedlings and assayed against larvae of Ostrinia nubilalis Hb. Larval survival, larval weight and percent pupation served as the criteria of activity. No pupation occurred with fresh residues of 1.0, 0.5 and 0.25% neem extract; only 7% of the larvae pupated at 0.1%, and 16% at 0.05%. The residual effect of the 1% aqueous extract was also investigated, 2, 6 and 8 days after treatment. At all observation times larval weight on the treated leaves was significantly lower than on untreated ones and no pupation occurred even on 8-day-old residues. Systemic properties of neem in the plant were demonstrated by incorporation of the extract into the soil. Quite good control was obtained when the corn seedlings were exposed to larvae 4 and 6 days after the soil treatment, whereas only slight activity was found 2 days after treatment. © 1985, Springer Science + Business Media B.V..
