Abstract:
The high incidence of renal stones in hot areas, such as the south of Italy and the southern United States, is well known. Southern Israel also shares this high incidence of renal stones, when compared with cooler climates. In this paper, the factors responsible for this situation will be examined, including drinking habits, salt contents of various waters, and other related parameters. Kidney stones are common in inhabitants of countries with hot climates because their urine is very highly concentrated due to a failure of the thirst mechanism. Urine osmolality is close to maximal in persons who have free access to water and who appear to feel no thirst.
