Pinching broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica; 'Green Duke') plants at different stages of development hastened extension of the lateral shoots and button formation. Pinching increased the number of side shoots only when done at late stages of development. A close correlation exists between shoot length and time to buttoning and to inflorescence size. Apical bud removal at any stage caused a delay in buttoning and harvest. However, a gradual delay in pinching did not induce a parallel postponement in buttoning and inflorescence maturation. Early pinching dates resulted in higher yields than did later ones, and it is therefore recommended that broccoli should be pinched at an early stage. © 1985.
