A well differentiated lithosequence in a highly complex geologic area in the northeastern Samaria steppe was studied. This area consists of two small hills (∼ 1.5 km2), which are composed of limestone, chalk, marl, shale, sandstone, basalt, tuff, and alluvial tuff. 26 physical and chemical properties and environmental factors from 17 soils were subjected to factor analysis in order to assess the relationships between soil development and parent material. Three factors were found to be significant. The first factor was readily identified with soil texture. Soils with high clay and low sand contents due to differential weathering of basalt and limestone have high CEC values and high water retention characteristics. Soils that are formed on sandstone have sandy texture with low CEC and water retention capacities. The second factor was ascribed to salinity concentration. High ESP, electrical conductance, pH and SAR values were associated with soils developed on tuff, alluvial tuff and marl. The third factor was attributed to CaCO3 content, which affects silt distribution especially in soils on chalk and marl. © 1989.
