Abstract:
Many apple rootstocks from England are degenerating in the hot climate of Israel. Hashabi clones and two Italian Doucins were bred following a survey carried out in Israeli apple orchards. Various varieties were assessed under different climatic conditions in test plots. MH 13.4 was found to be the best clone, followed by MH 14.5 and MH 15.6. Clone MH 14.5 had the highest performance with vigourous Starking Delicious, Jonathan and Granny Smith varieties. MH 13.4 and MH 15.6 rootstocks were the best with cv Golden Delicious. MH 15.6 seemed to be the most interesting rootstock under hot climates. Hashabi clones are all well adapted to the Israeli climate. They are early, high-yielding producers with a balanced fruit load/vegetation ratio. MI 30.1 and MH 12.1 were the best rootstocks tested, followed by MH 15.6, MH 14.5, MH 13.4, MH 10.1 and MM 104; MM 106, the control rootstock, performed very poorly. © 1995 Elsevier, Paris.
