The inheritance of fruit striping in squash (Cucurbits pepo) was studied in crosses of the striped cultivar ‘Caserta’ with the nonstriped cultivar ‘Vegetable Spaghetti’ and tester stocks of known genotype. Striping of young (summer squash) fruit was found to be conditioned by two complementary dominant genes. One of the genes is probably allelic or possibly tightly linked to I-1 and is tentatively designated I-1st. The other is the pigment enhancer allele, L-2. in mature squash only I-1st is required for striping to be expressed, but the contrast of dark and light stripes is enhanced by L-2. © 1989 The American Genetic Association.
