Abstract:
An inventory is presented of pharmaceuticals with a potential to affect human fecundity via exposure through the human food chain. Pharmaceuticals are reviewed in particular with respect to their mechanism of action, especially in view of endocrine disruption, their use pattern and their detection and persistence in the environment as important indicators of possible human exposure via the food chain. Sections on mechanisms of toxicity to fertility and on nutritional exposure pathways are followed by an extensive review of a series of relevant classes of pharmaceuticals. Finally, risk assessment approaches are reviewed. This work has been conducted as the first phase in the EU-FP6 project Food &Fecundity (F&) as part of the identification of pharmaceutical compounds of interest for further analysis in food matrices. © 2009 Woodhead Publishing Limited All rights reserved.
