The ecdysone titer of the silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) as determined by bioassay of purified extracts shows large fluctuations. A maximum is found prior to the last larval molt, another maximum during spinning of the mature larvae, followed by a short minimum and another maximum at pupation. In the pupae, two maxima are seen, at 2-3 days and 10-12 days. Even in young moths ecdysone is found; females contain four times as much as males. In Cerura vinula, the titer was determined in relation to color change of the adult (spinning) larvae. Two maxima have been found. © 1965.
