The genetic control of three protein marker systems (MDH, transferrins and esterase) of carp is described. The allozymic variations of these systems were found to be suitable for marking segregating progenies in multiple spawns used in genetic tests of quantitative characters. Two of the three systems were actually used for marking maternal half-sibs in four spawns, each involving one female with two males. The application of "full-sibs within half-sib families" design revealed large genetic differences in growth rate between full-sib families of the same common mother. In one family the difference between the means of the half-sibs was as large as 30% of the overall mean. The genetic bases of these differences which were not confounded with maternal or other "common environment" effects, are discussed. A high proportion of individuals with a specific skeletal deformity was found in one full-sib progeny but not in the second full-sib progeny of the same mother, thus proving genetic determination, but not in a simple Mendelian fashion. © 1976.
