Abstract:
The morphology of hearting of cos lettuce was investigated. Two main factors seem to be involved: (1) massive accumulation of successive leaves of similar length in the central part of the developing head, and (2) progressive, inwardly-directed folding of leaves beginning from the outside and including most leaves of similar length, the compact and firm structure caused by one leaf enclosing tightly the following one.No major changes in the shape of individual leaves, other than curvature, were observed, as midrib and leafblade extended at a similar rate throughout the growing period.Differences in the heading process between cos and head lettuce are discussed. © 1976 Annals of Botany Company.
