Abstract:
Systemic invasion of cucumber seedling stems, leaves, fruits, and seeds by Pseudomonas .syringae pv. lachrymans [PSL] was observed after inoculation with strains 1*1 -1-1 and PI -IS-10. I he inoculation techniques used were as follows: stabbing ol stems, dipping oi seedling roots in bacterial suspensions, sowing seeds in infested soil, and direct spraying of the female flower. Movement of PSI trom the point ol inoculation to different parts ol the plant, including hypoeotyls, cotyledons. stems, leaves, fruits, and seeds was demonstrated by assaying those parts lor PSL 12 hours alter inoculation. I he bacteria moved into the fruits follow ing inoculation ol either the stem base or the flower. I he plants developed external symptoms ot angular leaf spot only alter incubation under periodic mist. Pseudomonas syringae p\. lachrymans was isolated trom fiO', ol the seeds of infected fruits, and 16'[ ol the seeds carried the pathogen internally. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
