Fusarium diseases of vegetable and ornamental crops are caused mostly by various formae speciales of Fusarium oxysporum, which are soilborne pathogens and can be very destructive. Typically, Fusarium pathogens survive in the soil for many years, have many sources of inocula, and can cause heavy losses to crops. Because Fusarium pathogens are soilborne, managing them involves many difficulties. The emphasis in this chapter is on Fusarium wilt diseases, but the principles discussed are also relevant (with some modifications) to other soilborne pathogens, which frequently coexist with Fusarium. Soilborne pathogens affect important aspects of crop production beyond immediate yield losses and economic damage in a given season.
