This work was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Amnon Schwartz; Dr. Asher Bar-Tal

Calcium (Ca) in plants has essential roles related to tissue mechanical strength and plant tolerance to stress. Understanding its mode of translocation and partition within the plant organs is of high practical and economical value especially in view of fruit quality and related quantity losses resulting from Blossom End Rot (BER), a known Ca related disorder.

Based on existing knowledge reviewed, we propose that Ca and water are indeed coupled in translocation. However, as a variety of processes such as absorption and desorption to the xylem CEC, loading to and unloading from the xylem vessels, and fixation of Ca as low solubility salt, their direct coupling is obscured and may appear retarded, dispersed, decayed or at times, amplified.

We intend to investigate the impact of Ca2+ concentration on plant performance on both vegetative and productive aspects and to show that BER, is indeed affected by Ca level under probable conditions that ignite its appearance; we will study Ca distribution and partitioning into plant organs by sampling and will explore the use of Sr as a Ca analog on both partitioning as well as in uptake; last, we will develop a non-destructive sensing system capable of tracing a Ca analog that together with simultaneous measuring of water flow, at various suitable plant locations and at a high time resolution, will enable both spatial and temporal study of the intricate coupling of calcium translocation and water transport.
