Abstract:

-proof screenhouses have become an important component of protected cultivation in mild climates. They are much cheaper than fully climate-controlled greenhouses, and enable the grower to achieve a reasonable yield at good quality. An experimental study was done to determine the performance of different structure shapes on vertical profiles of temperature, humidity ratio and air velocity in the central region of the houses. Effects of screenhouse height and roof shape (flat versus zigzag) are considered. It is shown that, in all types of screenhouse, the air temperature increased with height, while the humidity ratio decreased up to a certain point close to the screened roof, where the rate of decrease either became much smaller or even reversed, so that the humidity ratios increased with increasing height. Air velocity in the screenhouse center increased with height, and was in the range of 0.06-0.2 of ambient wind speed.
