Abstract:

Suberization induced by wounding is essential to the healing process decreasing pathogen infection and water loss. The effect of postharvest treatment with benzo-(1, 2, 3)-thiadiazole-7-carbothioic acid s-methyl ester (BTH) on tuber wound healing was investigated on potato (cv. Longshu No. 3). BTH treatment reduced weight loss and disease index caused by Fusarium sulphureum of the tubers, and enhanced the firmness of healing tissues. The elevated autofluorescence intensity of suberin and stained lignin thickness indicated effects of BTH dipping during healing. The contents of major substrates of suberin synthesis, cinnamic, caffeic and ferulic acids increased in BTH-treated tubers along with the phenols and lignin contents. These biochemical changes during wound healing were correlated with the increased activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, cinnamate-4-hydroxylase, 4-coumaryl-CoA ligase and cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase. The presented results suggested that BTH treatment stimulated wound-induced suberization in harvested potato tubers and reduced fungal dry rot by elevating the metabolism of phenylpropanoid pathway. © 2019
