The commercial production of ornamental geophytes prevails in the regions with a moderate climate. However, in recent decades, globalization and increased market competition have led to the development of new production centers in the Southern Hemisphere, Mediterranean areas, Africa and Asia. At the same time, climate change in the countries with temperate climates poses new challenges in the production of perennial plants, and, especially, of geophytes. Since the annual cycle of geophytes is tightly regulated by environmental signals, deviations in temperature regime, drought or flooding certainly affect bulb and flower production. Heat stress and reduced water availability result in a shorter growing season and have a negative impact on plant growth and development. Moreover, climate change increases the spread of pathogens and the evolution of new strains of insect pests and fungal, bacterial and virus diseases. These new challenges require climate-smart crop interplay, which is location-specific and knowledge-demanding. This paper assesses the impacts of climate change on geophyte production and possible ways for research, development and management practices. © 2019 International Society for Horticultural Science.
