Squash leaf curl virus (SLCV) and Watermelon chlorotic stunt virus (WmCSV) (Begomovirus, Geminiviridae) are devastating single stranded DNA plant viruses transmitted exclusively by sweetpotato whitefly Bemisia tabaci. SLCV and WmCSV infect mainly host plants from Cucurbitaceae and Solanaceae family. Theoretically, secondary bacterial symbiont composition of Croatian B. tabaci populations enables transmission of SLCV and WmCSV. Presence of geminiviruses in Croatia and neighboring countries have not been detected by date. The intention of this article is to point out the possible occurrence of infections caused by SLCV and WmCSV. Melon and watermelon cultivation in Mediterranean Croatia is becoming frequent and popular as crops with high content of antioxidants and therefore occurrence of these viruses is possible.
Title in Croatian: Squash leaf curl virus (SLCV) i Watermelon chlorotic stunt virus (WMCSV) - potencijalna opasnost uzgoja dinje i lubenice u Hrvatskoj
