Abstract:

Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) (BegomovirusGeminiviridae) is in a group of ssDNA plant viruses, transmitted exclusively by sweet potato whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). TYLCV causes severe economic damages worldwide by infecting tomato plants as well as other vegetable crops and ornamental plants. The first epidemic was detected in 1960s on the Israeli territory which was directly related with sudden B. tabaci expansion. Since then, TYLCV has been spread in many countries, even in Italy, Spain and Portugal. In 2009, the first detailed monitoring of TYLCV vector, it's biotypes and secondary bacterial symbionts (SS) was conducted in Croatia. Gained results show that Croatian B. tabaci populations are capable in TYLCV transmission according to their SS status. Appearance of TYLCV in Croatia can be expected in the near future because of it's presence in neighboring countries and intensive international plant trading.
