Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest public health challenges of the 21st century. While traditionally associated with clinical environments, there is growing realization that this phenomenon is also strongly linked to the environment. AMR is characteristic of specific pathogenic bacteria but is not restricted to these species, and many antibiotic resistance genes are carried on mobile genetic elements that can be horizontally transferred within and between bacterial phyla.
