Abstract:

The industrial approach of agricultural farming involves intensive application of pest management measures including soil disinfestation (SD). Effective pest management approaches of soilborne pests have to incorporate the entire practices of the crop production within the management program and focus both on inoculum reduction before planting and on pest suppression during crop growth. These involve use of soil fumigants, other chemically and physically based and cultural measures. An effective pest management program that should consist of efficacious application methods and technology to ensure maximal effect of each measure on the target pest. Special attention is given to minimizing negative attributes to the crop, the environment, and the consumer, and by the adoption of safe methods. Thus, assembly of all components within a production system is expected to result in effective pest and crop management with minimal risk outside the treated area.
